What is Cancer?
According to the American Cancer Society (aka ACS), Cancer is the name of many different diseases in which cells in a part of the body begin to grow abnormally out of control. There are numerous types of cancer, but all of them begin when abnormal cells grow out of control. When left untreated, cancer results ultimately in death. Regular screenings & early diagnosis is the key to curing and preventing cancer and giving success to long term healthy living.
What are early screenings that I should have done?
For both males and females of particular ages there are very important screenings that should be done. It is extremely important that these screenings are not put off or viewed as unimportant.
* Breast Cancer- monthly self examinations, yearly mammogram for women age 40 and older
* Cervical Cancer- Yearly Pap Smears
* Colon & Rectal Cancer- Colonoscopy
* Prostate Cancer- Digital rectal exam
* Oral Cancer- Regular dental check-ups
* Skin Cancer- Self examinations, examinations by a dermatologist
if you are in risk categories or have a family history of specific types of cancer it is even more important to be vigilant about regular screenings. Prevention and early detection are the key!
I have been diagnosed with Cancer, now what?
While no one wants to hear those dreaded words come out of their doctors mouth, it happens each and every day, about 12 million people find out each year that they have cancer. Everyone has the "can't happen to me" mentality. Remember you are not alone! You should feel comfortable asking your doctor and nurses any questions you might have or concerns you might have about your physical, mental, or emotional state. At this time, turn to family and friends for support--chances are there are people in your close circle that have gone through cancer themselves and can associate with how you are feeling. Turn to support groups or counselors if you are having trouble dealing. Finding out you have cancer can put a huge burden on your shoulders, at that time you need to devote your energy and concentration towards getting better!
